Southeastern North Carolina artist Lisa Foor Rojek is intrigued by coincidences.

Her first memorable coincidence occurred as a college student studying in Florence, Italy.  Walking through a secluded alley on her way to class, another young woman was walking the opposite way.  As the two crossed paths, Rojek discovered the stranger was, in fact, a high school classmate from her small Pennsylvania hometown.  The odds of meeting seemed even more slim after discussing what brought the two of them together 4,000 miles from home at precisely the same moment:  Rojek was trying out a new route to class to avoid the tourists, and the classmate, who was touring Italy with her family, had simply wandered off the beaten path.

Since then, Rojek has found that people from her past, repeatedly and remarkably, pop up in the most unlikely places.  She views each occurrence as a comforting sign; confirmation that she is on the right path herself.

"Once realized, a coincidence provides the opportunity to make unforeseen connections.  New perceived connections allow one to rediscover, over and over again, the richness in life, and the purity in relationships.  One just has to be open to the possible significance of it all," she explains.

Rojek's art is best described as Expressive Realism.  In the studio, Rojek often employs visual allegory to work through an experience or idea.  She shares her discoveries and connections by representing a spiritual element alongside the physical subject in her artwork.  Her compositions are planned but allow for growth and discovery, which is crucial as the work evolves.  Her painting and drawing technique typically involves abundant layering, resulting in a desirable complexity and richness.  Outside of the studio, Rojek's plein air studies of cherished locations in North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Illinois express a sense of place that is colored by the artist's encounter and history with it.

Lisa Foor Rojek earned an MFA in painting from Syracuse University in 1990, graduated summa cum laude from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1987 with a BFA and art education degrees, and studied at Scuola Lorenzo di Medici in Florence, Italy.  She currently teaches art at an independent school in Southeastern, NC.
