Via Luminance

“Via Luminance” is a commissioned work depicting the majestic Queen Elizabeth II Bridge spanning the tidal River Thames east of London at night. The bridge is personally significant as a symbol of my clients' marriage as it connects Kent and Essex, his and her family counties respectively. The symbol has been with them for many years in the form of an original photographic print, and I have had the privilege of bringing it to life as a painting.

"Gilt-Edged Gaze" was commissioned for a client who is fascinated by the charismatic and intelligent crow.
The subject looks confidently at the viewer and is painted larger-than-life among the California grapevines. Simultaneously a creature of the earth and the air, the crow’s ubiquitous presence and power is represented, as is his penchant for stealing shiny treasures.

Board Walkin' shows a juvenile killdeer taking an independent stroll, possibly its first, across the boardwalk on a brilliant spring day.
Killdeer are members of the Plover family, yet are the shorebirds most likely to be found away from water. In Wilmington I see these birds nest on open ground with an inch or less of vegetation, like lawns and golf courses. Killdeer scrape a shallow depression in the earth, lay their eggs, then add debris to create their nests. Several years ago I was fooled by a Killdeer's 'broken-wing' act, in which it flutters along the ground in a show of injury, luring intruders away from its nest.

This work was originally painted en plein air on a brilliant midsummer day in St. Charles, Illinois, and further developed in my studio in North Carolina. It features rudbeckia triloba, Brown-Eyed Susan, and liatris pycnostachya, Blazing Star, which both flourish as wildflowers on the midwest prairie but here have been cultivated as ornamentals along the inviting walkway leading to this stately home.
